Our research

As scientists at Durham University we are involved in a wide range of research relating to material properties, magnetism and fluid dynamics. All of our WATMO activites are tied around current research: find out more about our research topics and related interactive activities below.

Vanessa’s research into ‘Soft Matter’

Vanessa is a postdoctoral researcher at Durham. She uses computers to look at materials that can act like solids but also like liquids – they are somewhere in-between. Learn more by watching the video below! Once you’ve watched that, why not try some programming yourself? https://scratch.mit.edu/

Vanessa talks about her research using computers to understand Soft Matter

Alex’s research into very small things

Alex is a PHD student at Durham who explores what materials are made of. He looks at things on such a small scale that normal microscopes are no use! Instead Alex uses touch and something called an “Atomic Force Microscope” in his studies. Learn more by watching the video below! Once you’ve watched that, why not try it yourself with our touch box activity?

Alex talks about his research using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
