The WISMO project

WISMO? (What Is Stuff Made Of?) is a science outreach project run by Durham University’s condensed matter physics department.  The project brings cutting edge research projects from the university into primary schools through simple, hands-on-activates led by real scientists. We aim to fuel children’s curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists through introducing key research concepts, skills and career paths.

What does a WISMO? visit look like?

Our visits involve talks and activities led by Durham University scientists, including why and how we became scientists and introduce the most exciting research we are doing. Activities and mini-experiments the children carry out for themselves using equipment like microscopes, diffraction glasses, musical instruments and more! We can tailor visits for up to 30 students at a time and adjust content to suit anyone from Year 1-6 (given prior notice).

I can’t thank you enough for the aspirations you have given them and the inspiration to love science.
